for ‘Rights fulfilled healthy people living in a healthy Environment’
Welcome to Healthy Lanka.........
Healthy Lanka Alliance for Development is an organisation registered with the NGO Secretariat and under the companies act as a limited liability nonprofit making company. Guided by scientific, evidence based knowledge, we aim to create community change towards a happy and healthy environment conducive to development and the fulfillment of human rights. Our main areas of focus are alcohol, tobacco, and drug prevention; gender equity; child rights protection and promotion; and peace and reconciliation.
In achieving our goals, we work to strengthen the civil society and mobilize communities. Our programmes cover a wide spectrum of society, taking place at the community, divisional, district, and national levels. We currently work in 86 communities, 80 divisional secretariat areas, and 8 districts. At the community level, we work through our civil society organisations (Healthy Lanka CSOs) which comprise members of the communities whom we have capacitated to conduct community work and advocacy activities. Our community level programme includes Community as a Laboratory, an action research programme in which innovative approaches to create change at grassroots level are applied. At the divisional, district, and national levels, our operations involve collaboration with government institutions and other nongovernmental organisations. At present, we work in 8 districts in Sri Lanka.
Policy Advocacy is a major focal point of our national level programmes. Regular advocacy activities are conducted to counteract the strategies used by the alcohol and tobacco industries to promote their products, especially to children and youth. We also conduct advocacy programmes for the proper implementation of the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol Act (NATA Act), as well as awareness and capacity building programmes for police officers, excise officers, and other authorities responsible for the implementation of the Act. Additionally, we work hand in hand with the Alcohol Policy Alliance, a national level body comprising organisations that work to bring about the formulation of policies for the control of intoxicants, and the implementation of existing policies.
Having gained recognition at the national level as the best prevention education institution operating in Sri Lanka, we at Healthy Lanka are dedicated to building a healthy, well informed population committed the development of the country.
